The Army doctrine defines Army Profession as consisting of two communities of practice: the Profession of Arms and the Army Civilian Corps. The Army Profession defines what it means to be a Soldier. The Army culture is based on the Army Profession and its relationship with the Army Ethic.

The Army is defined by the following characteristics: Trust, Honorable Service, Military Expertise, Stewardship, and Esprit de Corps. Army professionals have a responsibility to ethically perform their duties. Army professionals are ethical stewards of the Army Profession who establish strategic direction, priorities and missions.

The Army Profession is a duty of both military and civilian leaders who care for the people, resources and the Army Family. The Army remains a trusted military profession, both today and tomorrow, thanks to stewardship. The Army Profession is a trusted institution.

The Five Essential Characteristics of a Soldier in the Army

Professionalism is important for any job a person may have, but it is even more important for the military. Discipline, respect, and commitment are required for war. A soldier in the US Army has many professional responsibilities.

They must maintain five essential characteristics of the profession, including trust, military expertise, honorable service, and Esprit de Corps. Military Expertise is the next characteristic. A soldier must be fully trained to do the tasks that they are required to do.

Being a professional is not only about doing the things that a soldier doesn't like, but also doing the things that they don't want to do. The professionalism of a soldier is dependent on honorable service. A soldier must have pride and integrity.

A soldier cannot become a professional if he doesn't want to be honorable. Military professionals need to be committed to their work in order to be a good one. A soldier must be committed to the cause no matter what.

They must commit themselves to their country, service and each other to be able to complete the mission. Even though soldiers may be required to work long hours, commitment will allow them to push forward even if their bodies say otherwise. All military members need to be professional from the lowest rank to the highest.
