The Child and Family Centres
The agency that is responsible for child protection in the ACT is called the CYPS and it depends on the community to identify those at risk. Abuse and neglect can have a lot of consequences, and a child's behavior can be a symptom of that. It is important that anyone considering making a report of child abuse or neglect has a reason for their suspicion.
The community partners that are part of the CYPS are the schools, health professionals and services, and all those who work with families. It is possible to provide appropriate responses to reduce the risk to the children involved. The police, the courts, the community sector and other government departments work with the CYPS to help children and their families get the right help at the right time.
Failing to report child sexual abuse to the Police is a criminal offence from 1 September 2019. Adults in the ACT are required to report any sexual offence against a child if they have a reasonable belief that it was committed. The Crimes Act 1900 requires people to protect the child from abuse if there is a high risk of it happening in the future.
It requires any person in authority in a relevant institution to take any necessary steps to prevent sexual abuse from occurring when it is within their power to do so. It is important that you have clear reasons and information to support your suspicion that abuse or neglect has occurred when you make a child concern report. The better the information, the better the situation.
