Laundry workers and barcode technology

Laundry workers operate large industrial machines to wash, dry and press clothes. When items arrive at the laundry they are marked with a customer's number, barcode or other method of identification. After items are recorded they are sorted by colour, fabric and cleaning treatment.

Laundry workers load machines and program the wash cycle. Clothes are dried using tumble driers or hung in a heated room. Laundry workers use machines to wash and dry large volumes of clothing.

Depending on the care requirements of the different items, a variety of detergents, fabric softeners, bleach and stain removal products are used. They use ironing and pressing equipment to remove the folds from clean items. The washing is usually transported using carts and forklift trucks.
