The role of an assistant leader in the Girlguiding unit

Being an inspiring role model to girls and young women is a must. You will be responsible for running the unit, leading a team, and planning and delivering a high-quality programme of activities and events. As an assistant leader, give essential support to the unit leader and have fun.

You will help plan and deliver meetings, events and activities for your girls by sharing responsibility. If you are enthusiastic about giving girls opportunities for fun, friendship, challenge and adventure then you will make a perfect unit helpers. You will provide support to the leadership team.

You will be key in helping to make unit meetings happen. You will get to know the girls and other volunteers, and be part of the Girlguiding community. Girlguiding can be joined by people who are 13-18 years old if they are working on your DofE or similar volunteering programme.

The Scout Leaders' Council

A small democracy is a Boy Scout troop. The troop is made a reality with the direction of the Scoutmaster. Scouts are relied upon to serve in positions of responsibility in order for that to happen.

The patrol leaders' council is made up of the key boy leaders. They are the senior patrol leader, assistant patrol leader, patrol leaders, and troop guides of any new-Scout patrols. Adults becoming overly involved in what should be a simple process are usually concerned about the elections being popular contests and the poor choices they will result in.

They don't think their Scouts will be responsible forelecting good leaders. The patrol leader is chosen by the members of the patrol. The requirements for patrol leaders are determined by the troop.

The troop might want to hold elections more frequently in order to allow more boys the chance to lead in the new Scout patrols. Give each patrol leader all the support and guidance they need once a patrol has decided. A boy who at first seems unlikely to succeed might become a good leader.
