The head of a department at a school is given a particular subject and is responsible for raising the standards of the students in that subject area. The department head wants to raise overall standards of education by enhancing the quality and consistency of the teaching delivered by teachers under their supervision.

The head of the department makes sure that the teachers and support staff are adequately equipped with the technology and materials they need to deliver the curriculum effectively and that they are accountable directly to the head teacher. The environment of a school can be very challenging because no two students are the same. There have been cases of persecution, threats and physical abuse of teachers in the press, but they are rare and a school is considered a non-hazardous environment in terms of general health and safety. Carrying out the role effectively can be a challenge. A need to manage others and a tough personal schedule of teaching make it difficult to transition from classroom teaching to a department head role.
