The First Officer of a Starship

The smooth running of any starship or star base depends on the first officer. The bonds of friendship and loyalty forged between a captain and their number one can last a long time after their service is over. The first officer is an important part of the command structure of any starship or star base.

The position of executive officer was first established on Earth in the mid 15th century and has since been developed in many military environments. The position has evolved into a lot of work. The first officer is in charge when the captain is killed, missing, or otherwise unable to remain command.

The first officer must be familiar with their ship and captain. The first officer must be able to take the centre seat without hesitation at any time. The first officer is responsible for making sure the captain is safe.

The First Officer position on a superyacht

Larger vessels would usually have a Second Officer on board, but the First Officer is usually on the yacht. The roles are similar, but the duties are different. The Chief Officer is second in command to the Captain and is in charge of the deck crew.

As First Officer, you will be put to use your navigation abilities while at sea. As the second-in-charge you must be flexible to work many hours and be familiar with all aspects of the yacht. The first officer and the captain usually share control of the aircraft, with one pilot designated the "pilot flying" and the other the "pilot not flying", or "pilot monitoring", for each flight.
