Project Search: An Internship Program for Adults with Disabilities at a Job Site

Helping Hand Center has an Employment Services team that helps people with disabilities prepare for, find, and maintain jobs in the community based on their career interests and skills. The Employment Services Department at Helping Hand Center works with businesses to find regular employment for adults with disabilities. Vocational Counselors and Specialists help both the employer and employee during the hiring, training, and employment process.

Staff works with individuals to develop a resume, polish interviewing skills, assess work skills, career interests, and match them with an appropriate employer. The Employment Services Team helps clients to interview, provides coaching for the first few weeks of employment, and continues to consult with employees on an ongoing basis to ensure success. Project SEARCH is an internship program that takes place in the workplace.

The interns in the program are doing classroom trainings while doing internship at a job site. The interns work with job specialists from Helping Hand Center to find competitive employment. Students graduating from high school can receive training at AMITA Health LaGrange, while interns over the age of 24 can receive training at the Brookfield Zoo.

Teaching Together Chicago is an employment program that helps adults with disabilities find jobs in Catholic Schools. The program allows schools to offer 10-week internships to adults with disabilities in employment areas such as clerical, classroom assistance, maintenance, and extracurricular activities. Helping Hand Center staff and classroom staff work together to provide on-site support and job coaching to interns, with the ultimate goal of regular employment.
