The Role of the Sheriff in Deputy Sheriffs
A deputy sheriff protects the citizens of a county. They patrol highways and cities and investigate crimes. They ensure the courtroom is peaceful and professional by escorting people from court proceedings.
The requirements to become a deputy sheriff vary depending on where you are in the state. A high school degree is all a candidate needs to pass a civil service exam. A bachelor's degree in criminal justice can be an advantage in the hiring process.
The candidate needs to complete a training academy and be at least 21 years old. Most of a deputy sheriff's experience is learned in the field, which means not many requirements starting out, and previous law enforcement experience is an advantage. Most locations only require a high school degree, a valid driver's license and a clean criminal record to become a deputy sheriff.
A candidate may need to complete a police training academy, law enforcement courses and field training before becoming a deputy. A deputy sheriff may be placed under a period of time to learn the ropes. The deputy sheriffs report their incidents of on duty arrests and tickets to the higher-ranking officers like the Sheriff.
The Sheriff or Police Chief can help the deputy sheriff with any issues they have. They can resolve any issues or complaints a citizen may have about the deputy sheriff. The locations of the police officers and deputy sheriffs make them different.
