Mark Rapport, a clinical psychologist at the University of Central Florida, said that using a spinner-like gizmo is more likely to distract than help people with attention deficit disorder. The controversy surrounding the spinners has been over the banning of them from classrooms. Kate Ellison, the principal of an elementary school in Illinois, told the Chicago Tribune that spinners have been a distraction in her school and that children with special needs have other, school-friendly options for fidgeting.

Some parents of kids with special needs have praised the toys. A parent of an 8-year-old with a form of brain disease wrote on a website that her daughter was excited to see her classmates do the same. School-approved devices mark her daughter as different, but she is cool with her spinners.

The spinner's small parts may be a bigger concern than the risk of kids choking. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission is looking into reports of children getting sick from parts that have popped out of a fidget spinner, said Patty Davis, the commission's acting communications director. The safety guidelines for the toys were released by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, warning that the toys could be a hazard to children under 3 years old.
