The Code of Ethics for Speech-Language Pathology Assistants
The supervision of the SLP or speech-language scientist is still responsible for the care and well-being of the client or research subject. The supervisor could be in violation of the Code if he fails to intervene when the assistant is acting in a way that puts the client or subject at risk. The supervising SLP is responsible for ensuring that there is no discrimination in service delivery or scientific activities.
The Code states that discrimination could be a violation. The principle of ethics is that individuals should not lie about their credentials in order to get work. The speech-language scientist is responsible for providing appropriate and adequate direct and indirect supervision to ensure that the services provided are appropriate and meet practice standards.
The Code is not violated if the amount and type of supervision is adjusted. The certificate of clinical competence is not a requirement for the delegate of tasks that require unique skills, knowledge, judgment, or credentials over whom they have no professional experience. The assistant must only perform activities and duties that are appropriate for the level of training and experience and in accordance with applicable licensure laws, as guidance by the supervising SLP or speech-language scientist.
The supervisor could be found in violation of the Code if the assistant exceeds the role that has been defined for him or her and the SLP fails to correct this. The SLP is responsible for notifying the assistant about the Code and monitoring the performance of the assistant because they are an extension of the professional. Failure to do so could result in the SLP being found in violation of the Code.
The ASHA Code of Ethics for Speech-Language Pathology Assistants
The ethical obligations of SLPs are outlined in the Code of Ethics. The ASHA's Assistant Code of Conduct is a guide for certified assistants to follow in their clinical practice. The SLP is responsible for the duties performed by the SLPA.
