A visit to the museums and heritage railroads is not just about cars and locomotives. The railroads have the same jobs for volunteers and staff to do with the vintage railway cars, locomotives, stations, signals, tools and track before them. Railroad workers have helped, shared their stories, and shown younger generations how the job is done using vintage railroad equipment and tools, so that they can pass on the knowledge to future generations.

Railroad technology has changed as railroads have found ways to use new technologies. Railroad workers have changed their way of working and interacting with each other because of the introduction of airbrakes, knuckle couplers, larger steam locomotives, diesel locomotives, computers and fiber optics. Many of the positions and roles on modern railroads are the same as before, with the experienced workers teaching the newer workers how to work their way up the ladder.

The Division Supremo is an individual with authority over a division and responsible for track maintenance and scheduling. The Dispatcher schedules and monitors all trains. The apprenticeship program held the Switch-engine Engineer position.

They were supposed to move the railroad cars around the yard to get the freight cars together on the right track for the road engines to pick them up. The next opening for a Road Engineer would be his if the apprenticeship engineer proved his ability with the switch engines. The section foreman is the person in charge of a group of track workers.

The Section Foreman was responsible for daily inspection of the entire section. A section of track on the Atchison, Santa Fe, and Topeka areas was usually six to eight miles long. Section crews, or Section Gangs as they were known, were responsible for maintaining a long section of track.

Railway Track Workers

Railway track workers install and maintain railway tracks, as well as the tracks that are used in quarries and by the mining industry. Railway track workers are working on passenger and freight rail transport lines. They work in the weather.

They work in train depots. They work with large industrial machinery and may be hazardous. Railway track workers use a wide range of tools and equipment in the construction of railway tracks.

Maintenance Workers on Network Rail Tracks

They must report the problem if they find it so that it can be fixed quickly. Maintenance workers use their hands a lot. They use a variety of tools, including pneumatic drills, spades, and picks, to secure rails.

They may have to mix and lay concrete with the help of levelling, lining and suck machines. Maintenance workers on the rail track go out in a gang to work on the track on a regular basis. They may patrol the route to make sure everything is in order.
